Bon Anniversaire
My good friend Logan Bruhn approached me last December about doing a birthday shoot for his lovely wife Joy and I was so flattered to be asked to photograph her. From the inception I knew this project would be inspiring. Not only the shoot itself and the end result but simply the fact that this would be a birthday gift from Logan to his wife Joy. I just found that so beautiful, wholesome and inspiring. Seriously, #couplegoals.
I have always been inspired by dancers and their movement and was so thrilled to have Joy in front of my camera. I also wanted to take this unique opportunity to try something new. I knew I wanted to get out of my comfort zone with darker primary colors. I wanted to try secondary colors, paired with a high key look(lots of white). As well I have always wanted to experiment with double exposure photo and video but have just found my camera gear to be limiting in this regard.
Since my lighting gear was limited for this shoot I decided to take a unique approach to achieving this particular look. I shot the entire project, both photo and video in black and white. I did this knowing I could “Colorize” the highlights and shadows separately with any color I desired. I chose teal and magenta as a color combo because well… look at it. Haha! These colors always pair well together and the results are amazing.
I was a little concerned in getting a cohesive look between the photographs and videos since this was a new technique for me. However as I progress and shoot more video I am finding it easier to translate my color work from photographs to motion picture. Below I have included my favorite stills as well a link to the horizontal version of the video. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy. Cheers!
